I'm a full time working mom who is trying to figure it all out. How to balance work, marriage, 2 little kids, an annoying cat, church, grandparents, our house, and an apparent internet addiction. Figuring out how to balance these things leads to rambling. Lots and lots of rambling. From yours truly. I like to write and I love to make people laugh, so I try to remember that while I'm writing. Am I accomplishing it? I don't know. Read on and decide.

6:16 AM
I have this Saturday morning curse. Every Saturday I'm looking forward to hopefully sleeping until maybe 7. Does that sound unreasonable? I guess it must, because every Saturday my day starts around 6:16AM or earlier. The latest I've slept in 6 months is 6:30. And naively, every Saturday I'm stunned by this ocurrence, as if it has never happened before. Like the week before, or the week before that, or the week before that. It happens like this. Baby cry. Wake up. Look at clock. 6:16AM. Groan. Ignore for a couple minutes hoping it will stop. Realize it's not going to. Sigh. Fumble for glasses. Fumble for prepared bottle. Add water to said bottle. Enter baby's room. Shake bottle. Feed baby. Change baby. Pray she doesn't wake up too much to put her straight back to bed. Attempt putting her straight back to bed. Return to bed. Roll over and snuggle in. Baby cry. Sigh. Return to baby's room. Put pacifier in baby's mouth. Return to bed. Roll over and snuggle in. Eyes pop open in disbelief as I hear 'thud. thump thump thump.' Door open. Little 2-year old footsteps. Sigh. "Hi buddy." "I want seep in Mom n Dad's bed." "It's too early - go back to bed." Pout. Stomp stomp stomp. Door shut. Roll over and snuggle in. Baby cry. Sigh. Attempt pacifier trick again. Return to bed. Roll over and snuggle in. 'thud. thump thump thump.' Door open. Little 2-year old footsteps. With disdain, allow 2 year old in bed, foolishly thinking he'll actually lay still. Frustration building. "stop moving." "no, i just want get up." "too bad, i'm sleeping." "no" with growing whine. "go wait for me in your room." Pout. Stomp stomp stomp. Stare at ceiling wondering why. Curse another botched Saturday morning. Put glasses on. Grumble. Sigh. Begin 2-year old breakfast. Just when I think it's safe, baby cry.
I'm sick of Saturday.
Thank God I love these children. I have to remind myself hard on Saturday mornings. God, help me be thankful for them and every moment I get with them. They truly are a gift. It's hard to remember sometimes, but they are. Help us all cherish the moments we can spend with our children. Some day Saturday will again mean sleeping till 8.

Real quick
A Tall 4th Toe
I sing and put all of myself into it while I’m driving. I’ve always done it and its one of my favorite things. I usually won’t if anyone else is in the car, unless they, too, are a car singer. Kandi (my sis-in-law) – get ready for me. I can totally picture us rocking it out!
I have crazy eyes. Lately, I’ve developed this problem where it’s hard to get a decent picture of me without it looking like my eyes could pop out of my head. The more I consciously make an effort to control it, the worse it gets.
My mind is a steel trap for odd details – numbers, calculations, numbering systems, learning new things, abbreviations (except if we’re talking IM abbreviations – I’m totally lame about this, but I know the basics – LOL, ROFL, TTYL, BTW, WTF). When it comes to remembering where people work or what they do, forget about it. I’m the worst. Or remembering a story someone told, or a church sermon, or a book, or a movie plot, or anything relating to history. I completely shut down when it comes to these more important details. I may remember some weird detail a friend told me 15 years ago, but I can’t remember what they do. And I’ll be too embarrassed to ask.
If I see someone I know out shopping or somewhere, I tend to avoid them, even if I have no good reason. I’ve always been quiet and shy, and maybe I’m just avoiding anxiety related to that. I really can’t explain it. I hate that I do it. But I will say I’m getting better about this the older I get. Gosh, I hope I’ve never done this to anyone reading this. I don’t think I have.
And related to that, I avoid making phone calls, too. I hate making calls I have to make. I even have to gear myself up before I call family or friends. What is the deal with THAT?
I think one of my legs is longer than the other, and I can never remember which one it is. It always seems like khakis get shorter on one side before the other. AND I’m too short for talls and too tall for regulars when it comes to pants. And heaven forbid if I should have to hem all my talls shorter. I can usually make one or the other fit without extra work, but that probably means I’m spending a lot more time trying on clothes.
I love scrapbooking, sewing, and knitting, though I rarely spend time doing any of them. I assume one day when kids don’t need constant attention, I’ll be able to do these things.
I have hardly finished a book my whole life. I like to read, and I have good intentions to read. I buy books, and I may start them, but I rarely finish a book! I HAVE finished books, but not many. I am blaming elementary school. Remember book orders? And book fairs? They always enticed me, and I’d get books and read a couple chapters, and then they’d sit on my shelves. Sorry Mom and Dad.
I am a pile person. That’s right. I think I have a system, but nobody else thinks I do. My husband is probably rolling on the ground laughing about me admitting this. I make piles of things everywhere, thinking that at least I’m sorting it somehow. Or I’ll keep whittling away through the same pile, get rid of things no longer worth keeping, and put the rest of the pile back in the same spot to sort more ‘later.’ I was just talking to a coworker, who tells me she puts the mail in a certain spot, sorts through it often, puts the things to file in a special box on her filing cabinet, and files it weekly. Huh? I wish that were me. No, instead I just make a mountainous pile of things that need filing until one day I snap and spend hours at it. (I currently have a pile threatening to make me snap). Thank goodness for billpay.
I specialize in animal sounds. I have an especially good crow kaw, monkey sounds, and a decent turkey gobble. I have no idea how I figured this out! Lately, I’ve been making Ellie and Matthew giggle by doing it. And it works! When I first started dating Sean, he had no idea I had this talent. We were in the car, a couple crows flew in front of the car, and out of the clear blue, I started kawing. He almost drove right off the road he was laughing so hard!
I absolutely can not STAND when people use their feet in ways you are supposed you use your hands. Like to pick something up, for example. Or as my dear brother Jason would do, squeeze my calf muscles with his toes. EWWWW! Gross! I’m shuddering right now as I type… Can you say heebie jeebies? Because that’s what it gives me.
I have this weird thing where I think of people in terms of their future eulogy. Like if something really funny happens, or there is something funny or memorable about them, I will make a mental note to remember that for their future eulogy, even as said moment is happening. Okay, you may be thinking this sounds crazy, but my brother Jeff admitted to doing the same thing. It's not morbid - it helps me remember goofy little things about people. Just a couple of examples - my dad having a hangup about bringing red plastic forks to work in the summer (yes, only in the summer apparently - IDK), or a friend of mine and how she STILL sleeps with her 'cubby' teddy bear even though she's now married. (you know who you are)
That last one kind of tops the list I think, so that seems like an excellent place to stop. I'm sure there are countless other quirks about me, but do I really want to think about what makes me odd any longer right now? No, not really. Perhaps another time. I hope you have enjoyed this installment.
Until we meet again.... :)

The real punishment
I think the real punishment is what comes AFTER all that. Your body returns to normal - pretty much, besides a few extra marks and bulges that weren't there before. Right now I am thinking the real punishment is potty training and God is up there chuckling as he watches us all try and figure it out - especially those of us with boys, or stubborn or strong-willed children. But the more I think about that, I realize something worse than potty training will follow, and something worse than that will follow, and so on and so on. I'm going to revise what they've been telling me my whole life. The payback for Adam and Eve is parenthood. Plain and simple. Thankfully, along with the pain and SUFFERING of it all, comes a multitude of blessings and more sweetness than you can ever imagine. God knew what he was doing. Oh, AND, he knew what he was doing making kids unable to remember most of the first 3 years, because if any of us did, we'd be scarred for life. Now that I'm on the parent side, I see it. Babyhood is complete torture to a baby (besides all the attention, snuggling, and smooshy stuff), and toddlerhood is torture to the parents, and they tend to show it in not so pretty ways. So for that reason, thank goodness a lot of the hideousness in this time won't be remembered. Or at least we all hope so.
So, as I've done many times before, I would again like to thank Adam and Eve for their sin. And everyone else? Don't be fooled. They lead us to believe childbirth is the punishment -- but the real punishment?? Parenthood?? Now THAT you can never escape...
(ha ha ha - that was fun! please don't take me too seriously - i do like parenthood, too)
Claustrophobic with plenty of space
But it’s not all bad. It’s a beautiful day, though turning cloudy all of a sudden. My kids were a bright spot this morning, and I was thrilled to see Sean. No particular reason, just one of those rare days where neither one of us is groggy and we can’t help but to smile when we see each other. Matthew was extra excited to get up, since gramma and grampa are here to take care of him and Ellie this week, while their daycare provider is on vacation. He was awfully sweet – and Ellie was extra snuggly this morning. What a good way for a mom to start the day!

Meet the Kids

So this is totally stealing from my friend Cindy, but the kids really want to tell you about themselves in their own words. I absolutely can't convince them otherwise. So we'll start with Matthew.
Hi, I'm Matthew and I'm 2. But I am turning 3 next month. Mom and Dad keep telling me that means I'm a big boy and that I should poop and pee in the toilet. I don't know why they bother me so much. I will poop and pee in the toilet when I want to. I think it is relaxing when they change my diapers, so I think I'll stick with that. I really am a nice boy. They tell me that all the time. So do all my grandmas and grandpas. I like reading books a lot, and my new favorite thing to do is ride my bike with someone walking with me. The park is ok, but I'd rather ride my bike. My favorite movies are Thomas and my tractor movie. But Mom and Dad took me to a movie to see Horton Hears a Who last week. Last week really means anything from yesterday to 2 months ago. I keep saying I did things last week for fun, to see if anyone will believe it. They usually do. My sister is Ellie, and I like to hug and kiss her and make her giggle. Sometimes I get a little too close though. That's what my parents tell me anyways. But I know she likes it.
I like to learn new words a lot, but sometimes my parents don't understand me. I don't know why I have to say things 5 times sometimes before they understand, and sometimes they still don't. I am patient with them though, they will get it some day. I don't have any favorite foods. I like most everything. I really like eating, and I always ask for more even when my tummy is round and hard like a ball. I like to play with almost anything, but I'm getting sick of most of my toys. I used to play by myself a lot with any of my toys, but now I get bored and wait for someone to play with me. That's ok, because I like to watch my movies and Clifford and Curious George, and Spongebob if my parents will let me. They don't seem to like Sponge Bob very much, but I don't know why. I think he's funny.
I have to go now and let Ellie tell you about herself. Bye bye!
I'm Ellie, and I am almost 6 months old. I am a sweet and silly girl, and I really like to smile all the time. Tonight I was even practicing giggling. I haven't mastered it yet. I smile so big that I almost burst, but the laugh just doesn't come out. So I practiced. Mommy and Daddy just started feeding me cereal and vegetables. I don't know why they think I actually like vegetables, I just eat them because they shove them in my face. What else is a girl to do?
I like rolling over, and I really like looking at my toes and grabbing them. I keep getting stuck in bed though, on my tummy when I don't want to be. It's fun because it makes Mom and Dad come see me and make sure I'm ok. I always am, but they don't need to know. I have them wrapped around my finger. When I don't get stuck in a funny position, I really like sleeping at night, and that makes my parents happy. I am always ready to sleep when they put me in my crib at night. It's one of my favorite things.
I have a funny hand. I can't seem to figure out why it looks different than the other one. I keep trying to find my thumb, but I just can't because it's stuck to my other finger. My other fingers seem like they're all stuck together too. I keep trying to pull them apart, but it just doesn't work. My parents say I'm having that fixed soon - I get to go to the hospital and everything. I can't wait! I'll just keep using it like I do with my other one until then.
It was fun talking to you, but now I have to go to sleep. I'll probably have to poop soon too. Bye!

L-A-M-E with a capital L
Tuesday? The building I work in is offering a seminar from Let's Dish which involves free food. But ANYONE in ANY of the buildings can go to it, yet somehow it has been claimed as one of our 'June Fun Week' activities.
Wednesday, I admit, has me excited. Lunch to be ordered from Jimmy John's, paid for by the company. Woo hoo! All 12 of us! (hint of sarcasm) Though I do love me some Jimmy John's, complete with jumbo pickle - 94 cents of heaven. That's right - my heaven just may have pickles.
Thursday is mini-spa day. I've seen this before - it's a hand treatment that takes 2 seconds. Woo hoo - if you're going to call it fun week, please make it include time consuming events to get us away from our cubicles. And what about the guys? Geez, sorry, guys, I guess Thursday offers nothing for you, unless you're confident enough in your manhood to be treated to super soft hands.
Friday, they're apparently bringing in a Wii, but I hear that last time it lasted about 20 minutes, and all of 2 people played.
Is it safe to say I'm not very excited? Yes, I think it is.
Oh well, I'll still make the best of it. I sure enjoyed a root beer float earlier today. Ahh yes.
Yes people - this is what you're missing if you don't work. Doesn't it make you want to join the workforce? Or re-enter it, as the case may be? I bet my retired dad will be begging for a job. And my stay-at-home friends? Yeah, you know you're jealous too. I'll save a root beer float for you, since I'm sure only about 4 people partook in THAT excitement.

Confessions of a Working Mom
I've had this idea to blog for a while now, but I've been reluctant since I'm on facebook, myspace, and have 4 different email addresses and a totsite. What a nerd. I am consolidating, and I want my blog to be where people can easily look in one place to find out what they need to about me and the fam without needing to set up a password or become a member somewhere.
I have this idea to make a list of confessions of a working mom, which I am. I am a full time working mom and it is hard. I'm pulled in 5,000 different directions. I do not think non-working moms have things easy by any means, so let's not even try to go there. If I was a stay-at-home-mom, or SAHM if you're in the know, I would probably have to make confessions of a SAHM. Moms don't have it easy no matter what.
CONFESSIONS
I am ALWAYS late to work. Inevitably, getting ready in the morning does not go smoothly. I would get up earlier to get a better start, but let's face it. It wouldn't help, AND I already get up before 6.
I swear at work. I rarely swear any other time, but when the kids aren't near, it's like this strange, small freedom I have. I don't want to do it, but I do. :)
I don't make dinner way too often. This is bad for my confidence, probably less healthy for the whole family, tough on the pocket book. I say bad for my confidence, because every time, I feel guilty that I'm not the organized mom who can pop dinner in the oven (b/c I prepared it the day before), while entertaining a nearly 3-year old and spoon feeding a 5-month old who needs to eat the second we get home from daycare about 5pm.
My house is an absolute pit of despair, and never gets any better.
I've become a couch potato - by the time the kids are in bed, I'm dead on my feet.
I'm crabby WAAYYYY more than I want to be. I never thought I would be one of those moms, but low and behold, here I am. Honestly though, I try hard to fight it. I don't want to be remembered that way.
I cannot multi-task. You know the moms - the ones who can hold a baby, wash the dishes, cook dinner, AND talk on the phone at the same time. That is so not me. I feel like since I'm at work more than with the kids during the week, I don't get a chance to practice all that and get better at it. I cannot do anything while holding a baby. It's ridiculous.
I daydream of ways to finagle being able to be a SAHM (have you been paying attention? That's a 'stay-at-home-mom'. :)
I have been known to rail on SAHMs (sorry to all my friends who are SAHMs) for things like being able to sleep till 8am once in a while, being able to shop during the day without racing to get back to work from your lunch break, and for the fact that most child activities are during the day. It's hard to find evening activities - and let's face it - when you work all day, the last thing you want to do is get home, race to get dinner on, and then go somewhere else!
I confess I still love SAHMs and the only reason I rail on them occasionally is because I'm terribly jealous. Love you Kirsten and Danica!
I never practice my flute anymore, and it's devastating.
And because this is turning bitter sounding, I confess I would be nowhere without my husband. He is totally amazing with the kids and sharing the duties since we both work full time. Sean, you rock. I've honestly not seen many dads that jump right in with their kids like he does. He reads my mind and usually knows when I need help. It's awesome!! He's awesome!! And he lets me get out of the house now and then too, on my own! Yesssss
NOW END THE CONFESSIONS
I'll do more of these now and then, along with regular posts.
